University of Maryland College Park

BASICS

    • Approximate number of students: 37,600
    • Of that number that are undergrads:26,800
    • Students that are post-grads: nearly 11,000
    • Residence hall communities:

North Campus: Offers 12 buildings in 3 high rise communities with both traditional and semi-suite style housing for 5,500 students

South Campus: Has 4 residential communities(North hill, South Hill,  Leonardtown, and South campus) with 42 buildings. There are traditional and suite/apt style housing that will hold more than 5,500 students.

HOUSING: triples and quads:
Approx. one in every four freshman students  will be living in triples and quads. These are the last rooms we assign, so the freshmen in these rooms are among the last new students confirmed by the University to receive on-campus housing. In most rooms, the three or four roommates do not know one another.

North Campus Communities:

Student comments:
I live on North Campus which is a pain because my part of campus has the worst Diner to eat at and the South Campus Diner is too far for it to be convienent on a daily basis. The standard double dorms are small. And if you get stuck with a triple or a quad you are worse off. I was unfortunantly put in a quad so I have been going crazy. Alot of freshmen do get triples and quads.

not too bad at all. I am currently living in cumberland hall (in the cps cambridge community). Luckily it has ac which is definitely a huge plus. The rooms seem large to me and there are lounges and kitchens. Dorm life is really fun and easy (not much cleaning to do) and I think thats what makes it worthwhile. I think the location of cumberland is perfect as it's close to academic buildings, stamp, the diner, and right next to the gym. I don't mind the dorm rooms and since all my friends live there it is always really fun. I plan to move to south campus commons apartments as they are really nice but still on campus.

South Campus:

Student comments:

The freshman dorms are ok. They just need to be remodeled. They do not have central air and in the winter it gets extremely hot i n those tiny rooms. Upper class dorms offer apartments with kitchens, comfortable college bedding, and air conditioning. They are much more spacious and the single rooms are much bigger

Horrible as Freshmen, Good as Upperclassmen – I gave campus housing a B simply because even though North Campus Dorms, where undergrads reside, are horrible, South Campus is pretty good. Once you're out of the old, nonairconditioned dorms, there are plenty of apartment options both on campus and off-campus that are affiliated with the school.

Better Than Expected – My freshman dorm, Queen Anne's Hall is phenomenal. The room is pretty large in comparison to other dorms on campus. I have actual walls instead of cinderblock. The bathrooms are always clean and I never have to wait to shower, use the sink, or the bathroom. The only thing I would want to change is that my floor have a lounge and there was more than a sink and a microwave for cooking purposes.

STUDENT COMMENTS ON FOOD OPTIONS:
The food is not bad, but I've definitely gotten tired of eating the same foods all the time. There is a daily value meal that changes, but it's definitely not a value. It's usually between $7-8 for a value meal with dessert. On the other hand, the buffalo chicken wraps are good and the make-your-own pasta provides some variety. And try the dairy ice cream! It's delicious. Also, even though the meals are expensive, almost everyone has extra dining points at the end of the semester. So don't worry about it.

The dining at the campus are incredible. There are areas, like the student union, where you can go to grab a bite to eat. What I like about the dining hall is that there are food that you can choose to have. They also have fast food restaurants like Taco Bell, Panda Express, McDonald's, and Sbrarro. I like it.

Tons of Selection, but Not Exceptional Quality – Always a ton of stuff to choose from, lots of different stations, huge salad bar, and "theme nights," but the quality could be better and portions could be bigger. Everything at UMD Dining Halls is a-la-carte, and things aren't cheap, either. So they should either make it better or give you more or charge less. But overall, I was able to eat almost all my meals at the dining halls on campus for my first two years with no problem. (Now, I have a kitchen, so things have changed.)

The Stamp: Adele H. Stamp Student Union:
Campus center for all UM students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members.
The stamp is very centrally located on campus, and is an important location for many aspects of student life.

Student comments:
I live off campus and have had no problem finding food. Stamp (the student union) has lots of chain restaurants inside in a food court set up, there are many local restaurants within walking distance and accessible by bus that accept terrapin express. The dining halls aren't amazing but have a lot of options that vary by day.

food court at the Stamp: for a quick bite or an order of something to go.

Adeles:Sweet spot to take the parents when they come to visit, or a great venue for parties.

Student comments:
Acceptable, but Not Great – The dining halls are not plentiful around campus. This leads to long lines and difficulty finding a place to eat. The food itself is acceptable, but nothing special. There isn't a great variety. I would suggest buying the smallest dining plan because I found that I did not use about a third of it when the semester had ended. Lastly, the best place to eat on campus was the restaurant in the Student Union, called Adele's.
