University of North Carolina

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a coeducational public university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It is the flagship institution of the University of North Carolina and the second largest university in North Carolina. Two central quads dominate UNC's 729-acre campus: Polk Place and McCorkle Place. Adjacent to Polk Place is a sunken brick courtyard known as the Pit. The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower, located in the heart of campus, tolls the quarter-hour. In 1999, UNC was one of sixteen recipients of the American Society of Landscape Architects Medallion Awards and was identified as one of 50 college or university "works of art" by T.A. Gaines in his book The Campus as a Work of Art.
The university's campus is informally divided into three regions, usually referred to as "north campus," "middle campus," and "south campus." North campus includes the two quads along with the Pit, Frank Porter Graham Student Union, and the Davis, House, and Wilson libraries. Almost all classrooms are located in north campus along with several undergraduate residence halls. Middle campus includes Fetzer Field and Woollen Gymnasium along with the Student Recreation Center, Kenan Memorial Stadium, Irwin Belk outdoor track, Eddie Smith Field House, Boshamer Stadium, Carmichael Auditorium, the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History, School of Government, School of Law, George Watts Hill Alumni Center, Ram's Head complex (with a dining hall, parking garage, grocery store, and gymnasium), and various residence halls. South campus includes the Dean Smith Center for men's basketball, Koury Natatorium, School of Medicine, UNC Hospitals, Kenan-Flagler Business School, and the newest student residence halls. Campus maps can be found here.

Student Review of U.N.C.:
"There is literally nothing not to like about UNC. People worry that with the in-state percentage of students being so high - which can be somewhat annoying for out of staters - that instate students only hang out with kids from their high schools, but I have not faced that problem at all and have had no problem establishing a great friend group through activities, classes, and Greek life as an out of state student. Socially, UNC has everything. Great Greek life with incredible houses, sports, tons of student-run events, Franklin Street and Chapel Hill, and a thriving bar scene. There is always something to do here any day of the week and the weekends always bring great stories.
The thing I like the most is the school pride. Everyone who goes to UNC loves it here, and bleeds Carolina blue. We are incredible at almost every sport, and the student support shows greatly. Football and basketball season at Carolina are amazing, especially basketball. Football games always bring Saturday tailgates. Carolina basketball has so much tradition and is one of the most storied programs in college basketball. Basketball games are incredible and March Madness is always epic. With all this going for us, it is easy to see why there is something so special about this school and why everyone is proud to be a TarHeel.
Academically, I cannot speak for the liberal arts because they are not my interests. However, the science and math departments have been tremendous. Professors are very easily accessible and with the exception of a few bad ones, they have all been amazing. Carolina's reputation in these fields has helped me so much with employers and I've managed to secure great internships the last two summers almost solely because of our reputation. You will have to work and sometimes it can be frustrating, but that comes with studying any science or math-based discipline.Academics, sports, social life, student pride, and a great campus. Carolina has it all. Few schools parallel the overall college experience that UNC can provide. Do the right thing. Become a TarHeel and join the family! I feel bad for you if you don't." Students Review

U.N.C. Library System
UNC's library system includes a number of individual libraries housed throughout the campus and boasts more than 7.0 million volumes in total. UNC's North Carolina Collection (NCC) is the largest and most comprehensive collection of holdings about any single state nationwide. The unparalleled assemblage of literary, visual, and artifactual materials documents four centuries of North Carolina history and culture. The North Carolina Collection is housed in Wilson Library, named after Louis Round Wilson, along with the Rare Books Collection and the Southern Folklife Collection. The university is home to ibiblio, one of the world's largest collections of freely available information including software, music, literature, art, history, science, politics, and cultural studies.
The Davis Library, situated near the Pit, is the main library and the largest academic facility and state-owned building in North Carolina. It was named after North Carolina philanthropist Walter Royal Davis and opened on February 6, 1984. The R.B. House Undergraduate Library is located between the Pit area and Wilson Library. Prior to the construction of Davis, Wilson Library was the university's main library, but now Wilson hosts special events and houses special collections, rare books, and temporary exhibits. Library locations and hours can be found here.

Student Review of Campus Housing:
"Overall, a Good Experience to Have! The UNC-Chapel Hill campus is essentially split into three zones: north, middle and south. I've had the opportunity to live on both middle and south and have had wonderful experiences with both. The dorms on north campus are obviously closer to campus and often times of better quality. Most of them are hall-style (versus suite) and are often occupied by second-years and upperclassmen. I personally lived in Carmichael Residence Hall my first year (mid-campus) and had an overall good experience. The dorm was located directly between south and north campus so I had great access to everything; however, as a first-year, it wasn't a great environment for making friends. The dorms on south campus (Hinton James, Craige, Ehringhaus, etc.) are typically where many first-years are placed and they host more vibrant social scenes. Although they are not known for being the nicest on campus, many underclassmen do not regret living there because of the many friends they take with them when they leave. Also located on south are Ram Village and Odum Village-- on-campus apartments. I currently live in Ram Village and couldn't be happier. It's far from the academic buildings, but many of the buses stop right outside my door. My current apartment has four bedrooms, with typical college bedding, two bathrooms and a community kitchen and living room. It's been great to have my own room while still remaining in the midst of the UNC experience." College Prowler

Student Review on Campus Dining:
"Good Enough for Most - There are 2 dining halls where you can use your meal swipes, and they're both located on different parts of the campus, so you're never too far from one. There is a basic menu that is always the same so you can be sure that some of these items will always be there. For example, you can always count on the salad bar, pizza, burgers, fruits, grilled cheeses, cereal, etc. It's nice to have these stock items, so if the other dishes being served are not to your liking, you can opt for one of these options. There is variety where many unique dishes are prepared; I tried many things for the first time ever at the dining halls. As for taste, the dining hall has its days where nothing really seems to be too good, but for the most part, I would say it's above average. It's better than what I had expected first going into college. There is a strong effort to use locally grown food to support farmers, or to provide organic/gluten-free options in order to satisfy everyone on campus. There is essentially no limit to how many times you can go up and get more helpings which is nice, but can lead to the dreaded Freshman 15. There is no shortage in places to use flex dollars: Subway, Chick-Fil-A, Mediterranean Deli, 1.5.0., Sushinara, Jamba Juice, and the list goes on..." College Prowler

U.N.C. Tuition and Fees

Campus Dining Information

PRE-PAID MEALS AND DINING FLEX

Every Meal Plan is made up of two parts, Pre-paid Meals and Dining Flex, that work together to create one plan you can always rely on.

Pre-paid Meals

Choose the plan that fits
There are many affordable Meal Plan options. Just pick the one that works best for you, and you won't have to worry about carrying cash or keeping your mini fridge stocked all semester.

Value Plans offer a set number of meals per week at Rams Head Dining Hall or Top of Lenoir Dining Hall. You are guaranteed this number of meals each week from the first day of class to the last day of exams, subject to the University holiday and break schedule, with no stress about running out. We service up to 24 meal periods week and you may select a plan that meets your lifestyle best. Unused meals do not carry forward to the next week. Value Plans are non-transferable and may only be used by the Meal Plan Participant.

Block Plans offer flexibility with a specific number of meals per semester that can be used at Rams Head Dining Hall or Top of Lenoir Dining Hall. You decide how many meals to eat each day or week. You may even treat friends or family to meals with the Block Plan. Unused meals at the end of the semester do not carry forward to the next semester

Unlimited Plans give you the most flexibility in our all-you-care-to-eat Residential Restaurants. You get the value of a Value Plan and the flexibility of a Block Plan. With the Unlimited Plan, you may use as many meals per week as you choose at Rams Head or Top of Lenoir (one meal per 15 minute interval) and have guaranteed meals throughout the semester. The Unlimited Plan is non-transferable and may only be used by the meal plan participant.

Commuter Block and Flex Meal Plans are available to off-campus students and students at Odum village and Granville Towers. These plans are designed to meet the needs of off-campus students while offering the advantages of dining on campus. For more information on Commuter Block and Flex Plans click HERE

  • Dining Flex is restricted to applicable food items in approved dining locations only.
  • When using Dining Flex in approved dining locations, purchases are exempt from North Carolina sales tax on applicable food items.
  • Dining Flex may also be used for delivery to the student's residence hall from approved restaurants. However, the sales tax exemption does not apply to these purchases.
  • Any Dining Flex balance at the end of the fall semester will carry over to spring semester.
  • A student must have a valid spring semester Meal Plan in order to continue to add Dining Flex to their account.
  • Dining Flex is non-refundable and will expire May 12, 2013.

1.5.0. AT LENOIR MAINSTREET
Carolina Dining Services opened a new dining concept, 1.5.0, on January 11, 2010. For the past two years, 1.5.0. has served the UNC campus community the best local, organic and sustainable foods available in a quick and friendly style that follows through on our commitment to sustainability in our menu and our space.
1.5.0.'s seasonal menu features food that is locally grown and harvested and freshly prepared by chefs who are trained in culinary sustainability. Menu items also include organic produce and grains, cage-free eggs and poultry, grass fed beef, sustainable seafood and house-made breads, dressings and sauces. In addition to providing a healthy and sustainable retail dining option, 1.5.0.offers an engaging and educational experience for customers. An LCD screen displays farmer profiles, sustainable goals and eco-saving techniques that connect our customers to local farms and teach them how to incorporate sustainable habits into their daily lives.
The brand name, 1.5.0., was selected by members of Carolina Dining Services' Student Dining Board and refers to our commitment to local food purchasing from within a 150-mile radius.
Sustainable food products support the long-term maintenance and restoration of ecosystems and agriculture for future generations. Local foods strengthen and support small farms and local economies, and purchasing locally reduces the amount of carbon output associated with transportation primarily by fossil fuels. Organic agriculture prohibits the use of toxic pesticides, fertilizers, irradiation, sewage sludge and genetic engineering.
