I’m sure everyone will love reading this blog post, as any post about humiliating but hilarious moments in college or high school are the ones talked about for years and years to come. The most important thing about humiliating moments is that they happen to everyone. No one is immune to being embarrassed. Even the most calm, cool and collected of individuals gets
embarrassed at some point, sometime, for some reason. I think for me personally, the most humiliating things I do, say, or go through end up being the best stories in future conversations. Nothing beats a “where’d you get that scar on your nose” icebreaker that leads into the story of how you tripped over the vacuum cleaner and went flying face first into your front door.
Wait, was that just me? Dang.
I always love hearing about people’s hilarious moments in college; their first time clashing with their roommate, walking into the wrong class, showing up to morning lecture wearing a shoe and a slipper. The stories have been enjoying and rewarding to hear, and I’m always open to sharing my embarrassing but hilarious stories with others as well.
My most recent humiliating experience at school was while I was on the way to one of my Speech classes. Despite the fact that I am more out of shape than my 84 year old grandma, I had successfully trekked my way up the three flights of stairs to my classroom. By the time I got there, I was huffing and puffing as if the last donut in the world was being served and I had sprinted my way through lightning speeds to inhale it in the middle of the Sahara Desert. If sounding like I was popping a lung in class wasn’t embarrassing enough, the three hours were over and the lecture ended; time for more stairs. As I had made a few friends in the class, (but still didn’t know them all too well), I decided to wait for them and talk with them until we parted our ways to go home.
All was well until the second step of stair case flight one. Blame my impeccable balance or my amazing coordination skills, but that second stair did me in. The next thing I knew, I was barrel rolling down all three flights of stairs, half losing a shoe in the process. Now, I’ve fallen down stairs before. I’m no stranger to the unfriendliness of steps, as I had skid all the way down my friend’s deck stairs on prom night in my floor length dress and ended up with an ankle the size of a watermelon (if watermelons were blue). I’ve also fallen down the steps at my house while skillfully managing to get my arm stuck in one of the railing rods, doing an impressive one-eighty while still dangling from the railing. How I haven’t broken any bones is a mystery to me. Regardless, this coach-class flight down Stair-ville was a little too much for me. My classmates were shocked, and rushed to my aid. I’m not sure what was more embarrassing, telling them that I fall like this all the time, or accepting the fact that I had just nose-dived in front of all my new friends.
After standing up and brushing myself off, I couldn’t help but laugh with my classmates. I was definitely embarrassed, but I had to keep in mind that I wasn’t the first person in the world to fall down a flight of steps, or three.
Everyone goes through embarrassing moments, and you have to remember that were all human. Ironically, my fall branched off into a few jokes with my friends who I still talk to and joke about it to this day with. I think it was an excellent ice (or face) breaker that cleared the awkward tension of getting to know one another. Any friend that still wants to be friends with me after watching me slither down steps in front of a whole university is a friend I’d like to keep around.
Now that you’ve heard mine, what’s your most embarrassing college moment?
