Need a Laugh? The Best Comedies on TV

I don’t recommend or encourage any student to adopt the lifestyle of a couch potato, but occassionally some TV time can be good for you.  A little laugher and 24 minutes of distraction from school work can go a long way towards relieving the constant stress of college. Here are the first 5 of the top 10 comedies that take my mind of school and give me a much needed laugh.  Click here to see the rest.

1) The Big Bang Theory

This show always makes me laugh. True, the characters and plotline may be a little cliché, but watching these scientists struggle to survive in the everyday world is to good a joke to pass up. You never know what will happen next with this crew…wait was that sarcasm?

2) Parks and Recreation

This show is my 30 minutes of pure bliss. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and the rest of the Pawnee city officials have it all, or at least all that they need in their small fictional Indiana town. Watching their antics as they struggle to perfect their town and find love is always fun. My only recommendation, if you haven’t watched it yet, is not to start in the middle of the series. The jokes in this show, just like those in the office, are often subtle and they may be based on in-depth knowledge of the characters and their jobs.  So, catch the beginning on Netflix, you won’t regret it.

3) Always Sunny in Philadelphia

You will shake your head in shock. You will gag in disgust. And then you will burst into laughter, hit rewind, and watch it all over again. Always Sunny is one of the most original shows on TV. The Gang never fails to come up with something new and hilarious to occupy themselves. One of the best things about this show is that cast member Rob McElhenney actually created it, and McElhenney and his co-stars Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton play a huge role in writing and producing the series.

4) 30 Rock

Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey dominate comedy night on NBC. This dynamic-duo has the perfect chemistry, and their fast paced, witty banter flows perfectly.  When they’re on the screen I can’t tear my eyes away. The writers deserve a lot of credit for keeping the plot and the jokes fresh through all five seasons.

5) The Office

Two years ago this show had it all: romance, drama, and plenty of humor. If I go back to seasons 1-3 it’s still my number one show, but even though the camera keeps rolling the jokes just haven’t been as good in a while (okay there are definitely some exceptions). So don’t hesitate to watch this show, just make sure you catch up with the first few seasons on Netflix.  It’s worth it.
