Dust Bunnies and More: Keeping a Clean Dorm Room.

SONY DSC

“This dorm room is sparkling clean”, said no one ever. We all know that it’s practically impossible to get a dorm room to stay clean for more than 25 minutes. Mom and Dad are no longer around to do your laundry when you’ve gone to class or vacuum your carpet. Your TV and computer monitor WILL start getting layers of dust and germs, and staring at it won’t beam it away with your laser vision. Those dust bunnies will start collecting under your bed and trust me, these aren’t the cute … [Read more...]

The Clingy Roommate

the_roommate_2011_f_002

Getting along with your roommate can be very hard. It’s not like the girl in Organic Chemistry that you can just ignore in classes, at the end of the day you have to come home and share a dorm room with your roommate every day. So it’s important to maintain a positive relationship. This is first part of a series in which I will discuss common roommate issues and some positive ways to solve them. The Issue: You’ve always gotten along really well with your roommate. You’ve become … [Read more...]

So, It’s Gonna be Like That

Roommates getting along

Sometimes you meet someone and you know that the two of you are never going to get along. You are definitely not two peas in a pod; you have nothing in common, and you’d honestly be happy if you never saw one another again. But sometimes, that same person winds up being your lab partner, your roommate, or the person that’s always sitting next to you in the library. Maybe she didn’t get the same vibe you did. Maybe it’s just pure coincidence. Whatever the reason, it’s time to pull … [Read more...]

Since we took a look at the not so great side of living alone, we also need to examine the benefits. I’ve been living alone for almost one year now, so there must be something good about (or maybe I’m just crazy). Sure, there are days when I miss coming to home to a living room full of laughing friends, but it’s also nice to know that I won’t ever have to argue over chores with my friends again. There are good and bad things about living alone. Here are my top five pros; the top … [Read more...]

The Best Years…If Only that were So

33300zorok6m2ud[1]

Older siblings, parents, and random strangers on the street love to remind me that I have nothing left to look forward to. “College,” they tell me, “is the best time of your life.  It doesn’t get any better.” Personally, I find this hard to believe. Yes college is great. It was amazing to live in a community where I was constantly surround by friends, had the option to sleep in almost whenever I wanted, enjoyed my first taste of freedom away from Mom and Dad, and spent my … [Read more...]

What’s Next: Moving out of the Dorms

It’s never too early to start looking for your first apartment. Or at least that’s what I discovered my first year of college. I settled into my dorm in September, adjusted to sleeping in a tiny dorm bed with my roommate just a few feet away, and watched fall, winter, and most of spring slip by.  Only then did I begin thinking about where I would live my sophomore year. Before I knew it, I had found a group of friends who were interested in living together, and we had found the … [Read more...]

6 Tips for Dealing with your Roommate(s)

Dorm life was miserable for me my first semester.  I was placed in a suite style residence hall, so I shared a kitchen, living area, bathroom, and three bedrooms with 5 other girls.  The moment we received our room assignments we had problems…big ones. We made some pretty unfair and harsh judgments about each other based on only a limited amount of information.  For instance, we decided one girl was weird because she didn’t use Facebook or Myspace.  It never occurred to us to ask her … [Read more...]
