Be the Studious Student

Studying

I never really learned how to study in high school. Most of the time all I needed to do was a cursory review of my textbook and notes and I was ready for every exam. College, as a result, was a shock for me. Most learning doesn’t actually take place in the college classroom. Instead you’re supposed to complete all of your studying outside of the classroom, and take advantage of class time to clarify or more fully explore what you’ve learned. It was a difficult transition to adjust … [Read more...]

When You’ve Got a Good Book

College Students and Focus

It’s difficult to tear yourself away from the pages of an absorbing novel. It’s impossible to turn off the episode a new show that you’ve just discovered. No matter how often you assure yourself that you’ll have plenty of time to have fun later, it’s hard to focus on the things you have to do. But you have to do it. So … [Read more...]

The Advantages to Studying Solo

benefits of studying alone

Working in a group is often stressful and exhausting. Five working minds should make everything easier, but if often makes things ten times more complicated. Less Talking It’s really difficult to focus on the value of x or the role white blood cells play in the human body while your busy flirting with the hot girl in your study group or joking with your best friend. Those Difficult Classes: Surviving Astronomy

Astronomy was just a filler course. I had one more science requirement and I picked astronomy to fill in the gap. “I like planets; I think space is interesting,” I thought to myself as I examined all of the fascinating options (okay, chemistry 2 and biology 2 weren’t the most exciting alternatives).  Astronomy, I decided, would be the perfect course to fulfill my requirements. Yeah, I was wrong. There were pop quizzes every week, the reading might as well have been written in German … [Read more...]

Looking for a way to boost your final exam scores? Toss out those energy drinks and buy a couple extra packs of gum. Researchers at Lawrence University found that chewing gum boosts mental performance, according to UPI.com. The study found that students who chewed gum for 5 minutes before a test experienced a performance boost for the first 15-20 minutes of a test and scored higher than students who didn't chew gum.  Of course, the study advises that chewing gum throughout the test didn't … [Read more...]

The Demon I Cling To: Procrastination

procrastination-fortune-cookie

I don’t know why I do it. I’m not sure if something is wrong with me or if that’s just an excuse (after all I have many of them). I make dozens of lists ahead of time. I plan everything out, carefully scheduling my time so that I won’t ever be overstressed or overworked. And yet, when the time comes to do something, to get just one little thing done, I don’t ever do it. Instead, I push it back. I wait. I read my book, I watch TV, or I play my latest video game; I do anything and … [Read more...]
